I think we definitely learned more from the second hike than the first one - by the time we got to the end of the first one, we knew we hadn't prepared, but it wasn't until the second one that we learned exactly how prepared we should be.
I love that we got to see the angry red-faced lady and that we got to have our little moment of comeuppance later. It's the sort of thing you might read in a story like this and be like, "Okay so he definitely put that in just so he could have a foil to it later in his story," but no... real life just sometimes works out perfectly like that. We got our sign that this was going to be a hard, not-fun day, and instead of heeding the warning, we laughed it off and pressed forward. And then we're the monsters all along.
